Megrahi and Madoff

According to the New York Post, Bernard Madoff is terminally ill with cancer. If so, will he be pardoned? Somehow I doubt it. Madoff is hated in a way that Megrahi never was. It seems that stealing a great deal of money is considered a worse crime than blowing up a plane and killing the passengers, crew, and people on the ground.

George, let’s at least be clear that with Madoff we’re not talking about some roguish cat burglar, but an out and out sociopath who directly or indirectly ruined scores if not hundreds of lives, precipitated at least one suicide and almost single handedly crippled Jewish philanthropy in this country.

George, where do you get the idea that Madoff is hated in a way that Megrahi isn’t and way would you seem to disapprove if people in this country feel this way?

    Seth and fuster,

Seth’s comment is an indication that Madoff is hated in a way that Megrahi isn’t.

Why do I disapprove if that’s the way people feel? As bad as Madoff is, killing lots of people in a terrorist attack is worse.

George, I can see you rightfully disapproving if people think that Madoff’s crimes are worse than murder It’s doubtful that most people think that way, but they could be wrong in so thinking.
However, people might more easily be excused feeling more strongly about a recently uncovered monstrous crime than how they regard a monstrous criminal whose crime is twenty years remote.

How was my comment any such indication, George?

I think convicted terrorist murderers should be hanged. I don’t really care whether Madoff dies in the prison ICU or in some ordinary hospital’s. Then again, it would be nice if taxpayers didn’t have to foot the bill.

Why not send Madoff to Libya, too?

I think Scotland’s compassionate release program actually forbids the deciding official from taking into account the prisoner’s crime. Let’s try not to get laws like that here.

@CK MacLeod – We might even have fun suggesting the best manner in which to ship him over, but, alas, we’re not Scottish and unlikely to release him.
