Max Boot, concluding an otherwise quite useful post on the latest rumors regarding the President’s Afghanistan troop request decision (my emphasis):
It is imperative also that [the President] not make this a perfunctory announcement but rather goes on the stump, as he has for health-care reform, to make clear to the American people — and just as important, to the rest of the world — that he is foursquare behind the war effort and will commit the resources needed to prevail.
I’m wondering in which universe Max Boot expects that to happen – certainly not ours. Is the strong force weak there? How many dimensions? Does Alternative-Obama sport a mustache and goatee?

Mister Peanut could ditch the boring blue suit in favor of camouflage fatigues and a green beret. He could go around to urban high schools and encourage the youth to enlist.

President Obama getting whole heartedly behind the effort to wipe out the Taliban insurgency in the soon to be peaceful, democratic and tolerant Afghan Constitutional Federation is as unlikely as Vladimir Putin signing on wholeheartedly to bring his KGB contemporaries to trial.
Hmm? Is that a metaphor or a simile? Does it go just a bit too far?
It’s just a bit scary that I don’t rightly know for sure.

fuster, I have REPEATEDLY stated my belief, most recently when the rumors were of 20k not the closer to 40k figure, that the Bamster would go close enough to the generals to avoid taking sole ownership of the war. If you think back, perhaps you will recall our most recent exchange on the topic.
I have also repeatedly expressed my doubts that Obama could or would exercise effective war leadership. I don’t think it’s in his character. Nor do I think he’s ideologically or intellectually inclined to be much of a CinC. He appears determined to test whether the military can win a war by military science, by the letter of the war plan, rather than by force of will. History suggests that the latter is more important in any close to equal contest, and furthermore that unconventional warfare is something of an equalizer.
The US military has performed miracles before. Maybe it can do so again. I’d be more confident if the Prez was helping.

He’s waited three months to decide what already a fait accompli. Now it will take months to deploy, which gives the Taliban & AQ room in which to seize territory, and establish ‘facts on the ground. This comes in light of the seemingly blind failure to acknowledge the threat posed by the likes of Major Hassan on our own soil
